This Friday, the legislature’s Transportation Committee and the Environment Committee will hold a joint public hearing (via Zoom), and one of the items for consideration is whether Connecticut should adopt California truck emissions standards, which are more stringent than US EPA standards. This is a horrible idea, and MTAC needs your help in pushing back against this.

Adopting California truck emissions standards would mean significantly increased costs to your business, with little to no environmental benefit to the state. The cost to purchase a California-compliant diesel is estimated to be $57,000 more expensive than an EPA-compliant diesel, according to the Engine Manufacturers Association.

California standards also require that an increasing percentage of a manufacturer’s sales in the state be electric trucks. A medium duty electric truck costs 2.5 times more than its diesel counterpart, and a heavy duty electric truck will cost 3 times more than its diesel counterpart, according to information that MTAC received from a large truck dealer.

Trucks that are sold in states that don’t follow California standards will continue to operate in and through Connecticut anyway, putting your business at a competitive disadvantage.

Please submit written testimony and sign up to speak to legislators through Zoom by following the instruction below. Email MTAC’s Joe Sculley with any questions.
