FMCSA reverses course, extends Med Card waiver extension

A couple of weeks ago, MTAC reported (based on word from FMCSA) that the agency would not be extending the medical card waiver beyond June 30, 2020. This week, FMCSA has reversed course, and extended the medical card waiver until September 30, 2020.

In their notice, FMCSA states that “… many medical providers nationwide have canceled regularly scheduled appointments to dedicate resources to the COVID-19 response. Consequently, drivers are unable to obtain appointments for physical examinations with medical examiners to comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).” The notice adds, “Consistent with the statutory requirements for waivers, FMCSA has determined that it is in the public interest to grant a waiver, limited in scope and circumstances, that is likely to achieve a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level of safety that would be obtained in the absence of the waiver, until September 30, 2020.” A copy of the notice from FMCSA is available as a PDF.

MTAC urges members who are still able, to have a physical completed by a Certified Medical Examiner (CME). Drivers should not let their medical cards expire solely because of this waiver. This waiver is meant for drivers who are truly unable to get an appointment with a CME.

Members can use this FMCSA website to search for Certified Medical Examiners in Connecticut who are qualified to perform the physical examinations. Additionally, once the driver has obtained medical certification, the medical cards (short form) must be submitted to Connecticut DMV using this website.
