DEEP to visit MTAC March 21

Senior officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will visit the MTAC office on Wednesday, March 21 to discuss how interested businesses can apply for funds to help upgrade or replace older vehicles. The meeting is free to members, and will begin at 10 a.m.

The funds will be available because of the settlement from the Volkswagen emissions scandal. The settlement “establishes an Environmental Mitigation Trust (Trust) which will provide funds to all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and federally recognized tribes, to implement actions to counter the air quality impacts of the excess NOx emissions resulting from the use of the defective devices. The initial allocation to the State of Connecticut (State) under the Trust is approximately $51.6 million dollars.”

Funding will be available for on-road heavy duty vehicles including “Class 8 Local Freight Trucks and Port Drayage Trucks (Large Trucks), Class 4-8 School Buses, Shuttle Bus, or Transit Bus (Buses), and Class 4-7 Local Freight Trucks (Medium Trucks).”

Eligible vehicles to be upgraded or replaced include 1992 – 2009 engine model years; and eligible buses include 2009 engine model year or older. Eligible trucks and buses may be repowered with any new diesel or alternate fueled engine or all-electric engine, or may be replaced with any new diesel or alternate fueled or all-electric vehicle, with the engine model year in which the mitigation action occurs or one engine model year prior.
