Connecticut truckers say “no” to tolls

Joe Sculley, president of the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut, said the group he represents opposes adding tolls to the state’s highways. This morning, Brad Davis and I interviewed Sculley on the Talk of Connecticut.

Sculley on tolls: “The truth is, there is a federal law which says we cannot have the type of fixed-rate tolls that the states around us have.”

As for repairing the state’s crumbling infrastructure, Sculley added: “We’d love to see more highway taxes go to highways.  The Department of Transportation, when they present their budget, always say that 60 percent of their operating budget goes to transit subsidies. That is a crazy number to me”.

“We have to look to see if there are seldom to rarely-used transit buses being driven around and taking a huge subsidy out of these special transportation funds that would be better spent on highway maintenance.”

Sculley expects a big debate on electronic tolling in the upcoming session of the General Assembly.
